On June 6, 2019, we outlined the highlights of House Bill 7125, a comprehensive criminal justice reform recently passed by the Florida Legislature. On June 28, 2019, Governor DeSantis approved the bill. Therefore, the changes outlined in our prior post will officially become Florida law on October 1, 2019.
We look forward to helping pave the way as the new law gets put into practice. Specifically, we will relish in the opportunity to advocate for those charged with theft under the new felony threshold (now $750), facing driver’s license suspensions, juveniles facing adult prosecution, and those facing hydrocodone trafficking charges.
We are also interested in observing how local law enforcement agencies and state attorneys’ offices respond to these new laws and how they will work together in accomplishing the transparency and the push towards a more rehabilitative criminal justice system which the new law seeks to promote.
